Voices and Resonances: Empress Wu Zetian’s Patronage of Buddhist Art and Its Legacy

HKU Assistant Professor Dr. Chun-Wa Chan spoke on the development of Buddhist art under the reign of Empress Wu Zetian (r. 690-705) and its impact and legacy. Chun-Wa introduced a wide array of sites including the Longmen Grottoes and Mogao Caves in China, and the Todaiji (Great Eastern Temple) and Saidaiji (Great Western Temple) in Nara, Japan. He also highlighted some of the Buddhist wall paintings and sculptures from this remarkably creative period.
