The “Zen Art” Prequel: Chan Culture and Art

Dr. An-yi Pan, Associate Professor, History of Art, Cornell University

Co-presented by The Ink Society and the Friends of the Hong Kong Museum of Art

Much of our knowledge and perception of Chan art has been formulated through the filter of Zen art. As a result, people have come to accept specific genres and styles as standard Chan/Zen art. In his talk, Professor Pan presented Chan art by reexamining Chan as a living, organic culture, through how it interacts with the populace and elite classes of Chinese society, and how its changing practices though time affected the multifaceted nature of Chan art.
