Cultivating the Great Qing: Imperial Art and Work

Cultivating the Great Qing: Imperial Art and Work

Roz Hammers

10 November 2021

Presented by the Ink Society

Roz Hammers presented a talk on the appeal of revitalizing a Song-era painting genre, the Pictures of Tilling and Weaving. The Qing emperors adapted the 12th century subject matter in order to showcase the permanence of rule and the noble occupation of governance. In her presentation, Roz argued that paintings commissioned by the Qing emperors of agrarian work were not merely didactic, but served to promote the well-being and prosperity of all members of society.

Roz Hammers, Ph.D, is an Associate Professor of the history of Chinese art at the University of Hong Kong.
