Ink Society at Fine Art Asia 2025: A Tribute to Wang Dongling

A Tribute to Wang Dongling
3-7 October 2025
Fine Art Asia, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre

The Ink Society presented the exhibition “A Tribute to Wang Dongling” at Fine Art Asia 2025, marking the ninth instalment of the Ink Society's “Tribute” series, which celebrates the art and legacies of master ink painters.

This exhibition honours the pioneering achievements of China's pre-eminent contemporary artist calligrapher. Born in 1945 in Rudong, Jiangsu, Wang Dongling learnt from many 20th century calligraphy masters and became a sworn disciple of the "cursive sage" Lin Sanzhi in the late 1960s. Well-versed in all calligraphic scripts, Wang was invited to teach in America in 1989 and spent four years abroad. The experience expanded his cultural horizons and also motivated him to modernize calligrapher for a contemporary audience beyond China. After ceaseless exploration and diligent practice, Wang invented an original form of his own, the 'entangled script', which unleashes the full emotional power of calligraphic lines beyond textual legibility and meaning. Upon the artist's 80th birthday, this exhibition surveys Wang's inventive career and still transforming practice of over half a century with a selection of works spanning from the 1990s to today.
