In Ink Society's first-ever collaboration with Asia Society Hong Kong Center, this talk invites curators Julia M. White, independent Asian art consultant and former Senior Curator at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and Yi Yi Mon (Rosaline) Kyo, Assistant Professor, University of California, Santa Cruz, to talk about their upcoming exhibition "Singing and Dancing with Brush and Ink: The Art of Wesley Tongson," the first major institutional retrospective of the Hong Kong experimental ink painter Wesley Tongson (1957–2012) since his passing. Alongside the late artist's sister Cynthia Tongson, the curators gave an overview on Tongson’s early tuition under prominent painters such as Koo Tsin-yaw (Gu Qingyao, 1896–1978) and Harold Wong (Huang Zhongfang,1943–2022), to his development of experimental “ink play” painting techniques, and the relationship between his interior life and his painting practice. The discussion also featured a guest appearance by independent scholar and curator Catherine Maudsley, who contributed an essay to the exhibition catalogue and devoted over a decade of effort to promoting the art of Wesley Tongson. The talk offered deeper insight into the world and works of a pioneering figure in modern and contemporary ink art.
